In addition to bridge work, the Civil Division also works on public works improvements including parks, culverts, concrete retaining walls, concrete foundations, and structure restoration or rehabilitation.

Because we have our own labor force, we control the project quality and schedule better than a construction manager or a general contractor that “subs out” most of the work. This new bridge overlay was one of 20 bridges in Righter’s contract with the City of Columbus on the Bridge Rehabilitation – Annual Citywide Bridge Contract (2019). Located on Joyce Avenue over the Norfolk Southern Rail Road, north of I-670, it is nearly 835′ in length.

The rehabilitation of the Parker Covered Bridge won a State of Ohio Historic Bridge Award. The Parker Covered Bridge is a single span covered bridge with bottom chords that are approximately 170’ long. The Howe truss covered bridge was originally constructed in 1873, and it spans the Sandusky River. The bridge trusses had deteriorated to a state in which the trusses there was a negative camber on the rear end of the bridge, and both trusses were racked. The construction and rehabilitation of historic timber covered bridges is a form of craftsmanship that has been lost over the decades. Righter concurrently completed rehabilitation on the nearby Swartz Covered Bridge.

The National Park Service contracted with The Righter Company to replace the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Bridge No. 438. This bridge carries the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

This City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department project involved the repair of a 150’-0” single span suspension bridge at Academy Park and Wolfe Park. The bridge crosses over Alum Creek. Work consisted of replacing the main suspension cables, designated floor beams, all steel hangers, repair existing steel stiffening truss/rail and other repairs as specified. The suspension bridge anchorages at both ends of the project had deteriorated to an extent that they could not be used in accordance with the plan requirements. Righter proposed a couple of potential alternatives including the new design using helical anchors to stabilize the bridge that were ultimately used in the project.

This ODNR project at the Alum Creek Marina involved the removal and complete replacement of the floating dock system. Major items of work included in the project were 25,000 sf of galvanized-steel framed wood decking floating docks, all associated under-dock utilities (water, sewer, fire protection, and fuel lines), approximately 2,500 lf of 24” concrete filled steel pipe anchor piles, 1 sanitary pump out, 4 aluminum gangways, removal and disposal of existing anchorage, and other on-shore site improvements and utility work.

The Klondike Road culvert project replaced the existing deficient corrugated metal pipe culvert with a three sided arch culvert for the Delaware County Commissioners. Included with the project was over 1000 feet of piling driven and approximately 50 feet of roadway work.
