The Ohio Department of Transportation – District 6 Fayette County project is complete! The project consisted of the demolition of the old bridge over Rattlesnake Creek, setting new steel, forming and pouring the deck, and getting the road ready for the public. The road opened to traffic on September 25th with final work completed a few weeks later. Our Project Manager for the job was Mike Killilea and the Assistant Project Manager was Jacobi Schmalenberger. Special thanks to our Field Supervisor, Jerry McVey, and field crew of Butch Sullivan, Ben Sullivan, James Talbert, Jr., Dannie Wilson, Kasey McCloskey, Pete Fink, John Fuller, Vince Gaus, and the rest of The Righter Company who helped throughout the duration of the project.

- Experienced Heavy Formwork Carpenter with experience in building rough wooden structures, such as concrete forms, scaffolds, tunnel, bridge, or sewer supports, temporary frame shelters, according to sketches, blueprints, or oral instructions.
- Experienced Foreman with bridge/civil construction experience, a working knowledge of DOT–type projects, concrete forming, piling, excavation and heavy equipment.

Years ago, heavy equipment was big, bulky, and slow moving. The operator could see well in all directions. Today, this equipment is heavy, large, and fast moving. Often the operator’s field of vision is restricted.
During a recent Weekly Safety Talk, Tom Ison’s crew working at ODOT 190624 (IR 70-Pump Sta ST-8 Rehab) reviewed the best practices before moving any piece of equipment. They are:
DO A WALK AROUND
A. Before you climb aboard a piece of heavy equipment, walk completely around it. Check to see if any persons or obstacles are in the vicinity.
B. Warn anyone who is in the way that you are getting ready to move the equipment.
C. If mechanics have been working on a rig, be sure they have finished their work and all have left.
A. If your vehicle requires an inspection prior to use, review the previous log entry and proceed with inspection.
B. Make sure to report any and all defects that you may find and either fix the defect or take the equipment out of service.
C. While walking around, check all the lights, covers, hoses, tanks, any and all exposed connections for leaks or cracks.
A. Make sure to check under the equipment for leaks of oils, fluids or fuel.
B. Make sure there is a spill kit available capable of containing spill or leaks produced from the equipment.
C. Check all gauges during warm up.
1. Remove anything that can be damaged by moving equipment.
2. Review inspection log.
3. Check for mechanical issues.

The stage was set for all Righter employees to meet in the shop on the afternoon of Thursday, October 1, 2020, to review company policies and to hear about insurance benefits, 401k, life insurance, EAP and…the change in ownership! For anyone who didn’t know, as of 5/1/2020, Tracy Ferguson and Mike Killilea have been co-owners of our company. Their vision is to carry on the same values that have always governed The Righter Company. They are:

For many years, The Righter Company has joined the Central Ohio Construction Community to support A Kid Again families raising children with life-threatening illnesses. A Kid Again provides adventures that enable kids to get out of the hospital, forget about being sick and just be A Kid Again.

Featured is our ODOT District 6 project in Columbus, Ohio, located off I-70 at Broad in Franklinton. The work consists of the removal and rebuild of 5 existing stormwater pumps and motors at Pump Station ST8. Nick Miller is the Project Manager and Tom Ison is the Field Supervisor. Field Crew is Shawn Ison, Josh Preist and Robert Ward. The project has a current completion date of January 2022.

On Monday, August 31, 2020, rain showers made an appearance at the beginning of the bridge deck pour, but then stayed to the south of the project site. This project consists of updating three existing elevators at City Hall — North, South and Mayor’s. The work is being sequenced to allow one elevator update at a time so that City of Columbus employees still have access. Righter’s crew is Brad Guiniling (Foreman), and Bobby Sharp. Nick Miller, pictured with Brad Guiniling, is the Project Manager.
